The Opening Scene
We believe that connection is not an accident of proximity, but the beautiful result of intentional design. For Mitsui, this meant navigating the complexities of culture and hierarchy to create a single, shared evening of authentic, human fellowship for their entire team.
The challenge of an international corporation like Mitsui is one of magnificent scale, yet deep human complexity. When Fang An approached us—inspired by her own husband’s experience hosting with us at Singapore Pools—her goal was to do more than simply gather 48 colleagues spanning Singapore and Japan, from executives to new hires. She sought to dismantle the invisible walls of culture and rank, offering a shared, beautiful experience that would speak a common language: the language of genuine connection.
The Core Challenge
The fear in planning such a large, cross-cultural event is the risk of polite distance—the stakes were high for team morale. Could a wine tasting break through the deeply ingrained cultural deference and corporate hierarchy? Could it deliver a level of engaging energy while successfully navigating Mitsui’s strict internal compliance and budget requirements? The risk was clear: falling back into a sterile, forgettable event that confirmed everyone’s professional distance.
The Unspoken Need
The deep, Unspoken Need was for unified identity. Mitsui sought a gentle but powerful catalyst to transform a collection of professional titles into a single, cohesive team. They needed an experience that would signal to every person, regardless of their role or origin, that their contribution to the shared culture was equally valued. It was about creating a moment of vulnerability and shared joy where the executive could be a peer, and the new hire could be a friend.
Our Curated Response
For nearly two months, we worked hand-in-hand with Fang An. We treated the strict budget and the complex compliance process not as obstacles, but as the intentional constraints that define a bespoke solution. This collaboration included a rare site visit post-confirmation, ensuring every element was fine-tuned to the boardroom’s unique atmosphere.
Our design went beyond a classic tasting. To spark spontaneous, boundary-less conversation, we engineered a multi-sensory hub. We layered in the acclaimed Le Nez du Vin aroma kit with sensory stations, complete with whiteboards and fun lucky draws. This intentional structure transformed the final hour into a vibrant, energetic hub—a beautiful, orchestrated chaos where titles were forgotten in the shared curiosity of discovery.
As our founder often reflects:
“Large-scale complexity demands small-scale care. We see compliance and creativity not as enemies, but as partners. The meticulous planning ensures the environment is safe and professional, so the human connection can be free and spontaneous.”
The Evening Unfolds
The event began in the boardroom with a formal reserve; guests were seated across two long tables, ready to be polite listeners. But the atmosphere shifted the moment our sparkling wine volunteer minigame launched. The formality shattered. Laughter, sharp and unreserved, echoed through the space. Guests leaned in, questioned each other, and flowed seamlessly across the tables. What started as structured rows of colleagues dissolved into a roomful of people sharing stories, jokes, and genuine fascination. By the final signature toast, the energy was so high that we struggled to be heard—the sound of 48 people connecting was the truest measure of success.
The Lasting Impression
The impact was immediate and resonant. The guests left delighted and inspired, and the quality of the experience was affirmed by high praise: “Informative workshop on wine tasting. Good and comprehensive preparation. Workshop is well prepared like a restaurant setting.” This spoke volumes, confirming that the experience felt elevated, professional, and deeply cared for. Most meaningfully, a Japanese senior leader was so impressed by the seamless energy that they suggested exploring a future, even larger-scale integrated event. For us, this was a powerful affirmation: we had successfully bridged the gap, proving that our business is fundamentally about connection beyond titles or borders.
A Philosophy Shared
This evening beautifully reaffirms the core belief of Simplicity Wines: The human experience matters as much as the corporate expertise. We exist to navigate complexity, ensuring that even in the most structured environments, creativity and compliance can coexist. We do not fear large corporate gatherings; we welcome them, for they are the most powerful stages to prove that no event is “too corporate” to be warm, human, and truly memorable.
